Skin Care – The Importance of Exfoliation

Exfoliation is an extremely important and very essential part of a proper skin care routine for all skin types.  And when it comes to makeup, healthy skin helps create a smooth, fresh looking makeup application.

While exfoliation is important for everyone, it is especially important for brides whose weddings are fast approaching to start!  Exfoliation really improves the look of your skin so in order to get the most out of your bridal makeup application on your wedding day, start exfoliating at least 6 weeks before your wedding day.

What is exfoliation?  Exfoliation is a skin care step that involves the removal of the dead skin cells that are on the surface of the skin.  Because our skin is constanting reproducing skin cells from the bottom layer up, the older skin cells are continously being pushed to the skin’s surface.  As the old, dead skin cells reach the surface of the skin, they start to cause the skin to look very dull and devitalized if not removed through exfoliation.  The skin can also become rough and bumpy causing your foundation, powder and blush to apply very poorly.

Exfoliating these dead skin cells from the surface of the skin can reduce acne, revitalize the skin, improve the skins texture as well as give it a much healthier colour and glow.  When the texture and tone of the skin improves through proper skin care and exfoliation, your makeup products will apply much better and will look much better also.

You should purchase a good quality exfoliator and exfoliate your skin every 3 days or twice a week.  A good quality exfoliator will contain exfoliating beads that are perfectly round and glide over your skin to give it a proper exfoliation that will not damage your skin.  There are a lot of exfoliating products out there that you will want to be careful of and avoid.  An example of this is an apricot scrub.  Exfoliators containing apricots usually involve grinding the apricot pit.  These grinds are not ground into circular shapes and often contain sharp edges that can cause microscopic tears in your skin.  These tears can lead to skin problems so again, when choosing an exfoliator, please choose a good quality exfoliator.  If you are in the store looking for an exfoliator and are unsure, you are safest to ask. This is one of those prime examples of “you get what you pay for”.

When it comes to a good exfoliator I, personally, recommend Oxygen Botanicals Exfoliant.  Oxygen Botanicals is a professional skin care line used by spas.  I have tried many different exfoliators in the past and none of them even come close to comparing to the Oxygen Botanicals Exfoliant!
