10 Tips for Beautiful Skin

Bridal Makeup Skin Care Tips Article Photo for Wedding MakeupAs a Makeup Artist, I have a lot of clients ask me for tips on how to get flawless, younger looking skin.  Here are 10 tips that I always recommend to my clients in order to help their skin look its best:

Water is your best skin care product.  The healthiest, youngest looking skin is skin that is hydrated.  The best quality products will not hydrate your skin alone.  It is really important to hydrate your skin from the inside out.  If you increase your water intake by 3 large glasses of water per day, I can assure you that your skin will improve within 3 weeks just from this simple change.

Exfoliate!!  Dead cell build up can cause the skin to look very dull and devitalized.  Exfoliating your skin every three days will remove these dead skin cells causing your skin to look much brighter and renewed.  Treatment products such as serums and specialty creams will also be better absorbed if they do not have to fight through layers of dead skin cells.

Moisturize before applying makeup.  Many non-professional makeup products can really clog your pores.  It is best to apply a moisturizer 10-15 minutes before applying makeup.  The moisturizer will create a barrier on your skin preventing the makeup from clogging your pores as much.  Also, makeup looks a lot better when applied over moistuzer as some makeup tends to "sit" in your fine lines and wrinkles.  When it is applied over a moisturizer, it gives the skin a smoother appearance.

Always use SPF - even in the winter.  Sun is good for your skin to a certain extent.  As we know, the sun is our best source for Vitamin D and this a very important vitamin for our body to get.  However, too much sun can be extremely harmful for our skin.  It can damage your skin, cause premature aging and even skin cancer.  It is so important to protect your skin.  Even in the winter when we think the sun is not strong, the strength of the rays can still be very damaging.  Sun screen should be worn on a daily basis.  Your best bet is to purchase a moisturizer with SPF so your skin is constantly protected.  SPF 30 or higher is best.

Get plenty of rest.  Rest is so important at every age in life.  Those of us who do not get proper rest really end up suffering from it over time.  Lack of sleep causes premature aging,  health problems and can even lead to emotional stress.

Eat healthy, nutritious meals and snacks.  Getting the proper amount of nutrients from all the different food groups is really important in order for our bodies to function at their optimal performance.  When we are healthy, we have healthy looking skin.  If you do not get enough nutrients each day through diet alone, make sure you take a multi-vitamin.

Exercise. Exercise contributes to healthy skin in a number of different ways.  First off, it is known that exercise helps slow down the aging process of the entire body, including the skin.  Exercising also burn calories and uses your bodies energy promoting better, healthier sleeping habits.  The benefits of exercise do not just end there either.  Regular exercise brings oxygen to the skin causing it to look brighter and healther.  It also increases circulation, improves your appearance and gives you a better self-esteem.

Don't smoke!  Smoking causes premature aging and can lead to a number of health problems.  It also robs the skin of oxygen, decreases blood circulation and increases toxins in the body.  All of these factors can easily lead to poor skin conditions.

Avoid Stress where ever and whenever possible.  This tip is much easier said than done.  While stress is not always easy to avoid, an unhealthy amount of stress can cause both physical and mental disruptions to your body. Stress can cause your skin to break out and become overily sensitive.

Don't pick!! I know how tempting it is when you look in the mirror and see a blackhead or a pimple that is calling to be popped.  No matter how tempting it is, don't pick.  Popping pimples and clogged pores can cause scarring and can also spread the bacteria to other parts of your face causing more breakouts in a few days.

When you walk down the aisle on your wedding day, all eyes will be focused on you (and so will the camera)!  And every bride needs to look and feel her best on her wedding day.

Beginning 6 months before your wedding, taking proper care of your skin and your body should be on the top of your priority list in order to acheive the best look and the most flawless bridal makeup application possible.  Don't get me wrong, your skin does not have to be perfect (afterall, who has perfect skin?).  But the better you take care of your skin during this time, the better your bridal makeup application will look.

One very important thing to do for these 6 months is to keep your skin hydrated.  Drink plenty of water (for more tips on this read the article "10 Tips for Beautiful Skin" below.  Hydrated skin is often healthy skin.  And the more hydrated your skin is, the more flawless it will look when your makeup is applied.  Hydrated skin also tends to look younger as well!  Definitely an added bonus.

Here are my recommendations as both a makeup artist and an aesthetician (skin care specialist) in order to help you acheive your best look for your wedding day:

6 Months Before Your Bridal Makeup Application

This is the perfect time to start pampering yourself.  And if you love to be pampered and do not often get the chance to do it, now you have the perfect reason to indulge.

Beginning 6 months before your wedding day, book yourself in for a Facial at your local spa.  Facials give your skin a much deeper cleanse than what your home regime can give you.  A professional facial will also help give your skin a deep exfoliation, ridding the surface of your skin of the dead skin cells that can cause skin to look dull and devitalized.  A professional facial will also help encourage the renewal of living, healthy skin cells and will really make your skin look revitalized while bringing more natural colour to your skin.  Professional facials should be continued every 6 weeks from now until one week before your wedding day (it is not recommended to get a facial within the 7 day period before your wedding day).

If you do not already have a proper skin care regime that you follow on a daily basis, now is the time to start.  It is important to cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin twice a day, everyday and to exfoliate at least once a week (twice a week is best).

1-2 Weeks Before Your Bridal Makeup Application

Now is the time to book that last Facial before the big day to get rid of any dead cell build up on the surface of your skin.  This will help make your skin smoother and allow the makeup to glide flawlessly across your skin without any flaking.

3-5 Days Before Your Bridal Makeup Application

Because the photographer will be following you around all day taking close up pictures of you, you will want to consider visiting your local spa and have your eyebrows waxed.  Professional cameras pick up quite a bit of detail so you will want all of those stray hairs to be gone.  Eye makeup also applies better when the finer hairs have been waxed.

Depending on the amount of hair you have, this also might be an ideal time to consider an upper lip wax.

1 Day Before Your Birdal Makeup Application

This is the most important day to exfoliate.  Again, to get rid of any dead cell build up on the surface of your skin.  This will help make your skin smoother and allow the makeup to glide flawlessly across your skin without any flaking.  Other than this, just follow your daily routine as usual, drink plenty of water and try to get some rest before your big day!
